For full-time RV travelers, reliable internet isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. Whether you’re working remotely, streaming, or staying connected with family, Starlink has quickly become the go-to option. But with multiple dish choices now available, RVers often wonder: Which Starlink setup is best for life on the road?
The Standard Dish
The Standard Starlink dish (sometimes called “Dishy”) is the entry-level option. It’s lightweight, compact, and ideal for RVers who move occasionally but spend longer periods parked. Setup is simple: place the dish on the ground or mount it on a tripod, and it automatically finds satellites.
Pros: Lowest cost, easy to move, perfect for stationary camping.
- Cons: Not designed for in-motion use, needs a clear view of the sky.
The Standard Dish with Portability

- Cons: Much higher cost for both equipment and plan, requires professional-style installation.
The Mini Dish: A New Option (My Choice)
Starlink recently introduced the Mini Dish, a compact version designed for portability. It’s lighter and easier to store, making it especially attractive for RVers with limited space. While it doesn’t always match the speed and stability of the larger dishes, it’s a solid choice for most everyday needs.
I personally chose the Mini for my RV setup—and I love it. It’s easy to move, quick to set up, and takes up almost no room. The only negative I’ve found is that since the router is built into the Mini, camping in heavily wooded areas can be tricky. Sometimes I need to physically move the dish as far as the cable will reach to find sky access. That usually solves the satellite connection issue, but it places the router farther from my RV, which decreases the Wi-Fi signal indoors.
Even with that quirk, the Mini has been a great balance of portability and performance for full-time RV life.
